So, you've decided to join a coworking space after doing some research and learning about the benefits. Now what? You probably have hundreds of questions. What should I pack for work? Where am I going to sit? Can I drink anything there? Is it necessary for me to bring food? How long is my commute? Is there a microwave available? What are my lunch options? Don’t worry. You’ll find the answers to most of your questions in this video.
All members of most coworking spaces should adhere to the house rules and etiquette standards. The coworking space manager or a coworker will most likely give you a quick walkthrough of the space and explain to you how things work in your coworking space on your first day. Even when somebody tells you to do something differently, thank them for pointing it out. You must follow the same rules as a team.
If you work in a coworking environment, you almost certainly rely on your computer to get things done. So, don’t forget to bring the correct charger for your laptop and don’t panic if you leave it at home. Probably there will be someone who will lend you one. Don’t hesitate to ask for assistance and ask ‘What would you do to fix this?’ After all, coworking is all about helping each other and collaborating.
In order to keep noise to a minimum and be considerate of other co‑workers, use your headphones whenever you’re playing a video, or simply if you want to listen to your favourite music while working.
Bring snacks with you if you work long days and feel peckish. Some coworking spaces provide food on a daily basis, while in others you can find some vending machines with snacks.
One of the most significant advantages of coworking spaces is that they offer networking possibilities. You never know who you'll meet in your coworking space who might be interested in doing business with you, so carry your business cards to distribute them among other coworking members or visitors.
If you bring your lunch from home, be careful what you microwave and eat. Having meals in shared spaces might not be the best thing to do due to strong smells. Also, take advantage of your lunch break to socialise with other co‑workers. You can eat in the coworking space, but also order some take‑away, or go out to eat.
One of the most crucial features of a coworking space is that it fosters and builds community. Make an effort to contribute to that community by smiling and being in a happy mood every day. Take responsibility for keeping your place clean. Greet everyone who enters the space and don’t complain by saying ‘I’m sorry, I’ve got a lot on my plate now’.
If you have a dedicated desk or private office it’s nice to have a plant on your desk. Plants in the office are said to boost vitality and productivity, enhance air quality, and reduce stress levels. They also look attractive, and they provide a personal touch to your workspace. You can also bring a picture of your family or pet to make the space more personal. Isn’t that amazing? How didn’t you come up with that?
