This is Ben. He’s a chef in a restaurant. He has to know a lot about food to create interesting menus. He must study different recipes and work under pressure. He also has to manage kitchen staff. However, he doesn’t have to get up early in the morning because the restaurant doesn’t open till 1 p.m.

This is Jerry. Jerry is a veterinarian, or vet for short. He loves working with different kinds of animals, but his favourite ones are dogs. Jerry has to be very responsible. He has to look after animals and he has to be very patient with them. He also mustn’t show that he’s scared of them because if he does, they will feel it. What does he like about his job? “One thing that I enjoy is that I don’t have to commute to work because I’ve got my own practice at home.”

This is Stuart. He’s a firefighter. He wanted to be a policeman first, like his dad, but now he works at a local fire station. He has to put out fires and rescue people. He must be calm and brave. But not only people need his help: he rescues animals, too. Sometimes he has to save cats that climb trees and can’t get down. He must be very careful and mustn’t ignore any signs of danger.

This is Jenny. She works in a big hospital in London. She has to work with sick people from different countries, so she has to speak at least two foreign languages. She must be patient because some people need a lot of care and attention. She must be very careful when she gives medication. Sometimes she has to work at night, but then the next day she doesn’t have to come to work. She can stay at home and relax.

This is Jack. He is a shop assistant. He’s working in his own shop. Every day he has to fill orders and put all the products on the shelves. He doesn’t have to drive anywhere to get the products he sells because he orders everything online. He’s got a lot of regular customers who come to his shop early in the morning to buy fresh bread and rolls so he mustn’t be late for work and he mustn’t forget the keys to his shop.

This is Steve. He is a police officer, like his grandad. His duty is to help people and catch criminals. He likes his job because he doesn’t have to work in an office. He has to patrol the streets and write reports about accidents. Steve must be tough and strict and he mustn’t be afraid of the people who break the law. Many of his colleagues have to work shifts, but he doesn’t. He’s happy about it because he doesn’t like working at night.
