Peter: Good afternoon everyone. My name is Peter and today we have a very special guest with us. Let’s welcome Shawn Goldman. 

Shawn: Good afternoon, Peter and thank you for a warm welcome.

P: Shawn, you’re a researcher astronomer at NASA’s Space Flight Center.

S: Yes Peter, that’s right. I’ve worked there for a long time and I like it a lot.

P: Shawn, we invited you here today because we want to ask you a very important question, a question everyone would like to know the answer to, and it is:  are we alone?

S: Well Peter, here, at the studio, as you can see, no.

P: Yes, Shawn but in the Universe because when I look up in the sky I often  ask myself if there’s anybody out there, and if yes, what do they look like or like or even do.

S: Peter, I also would like to know the answer to this question but I’m afraid that we still don’t know.

P: But why can’t scientists still find life beyond Earth?

S: Well, I’m sure you know  that scientists now  know much  more than earlier generations about our galaxy.

P: You mean the Milky Way?

S: Yes, because that’s the name of the galaxy we live in. I hope everybody knows it is huge and that it has around 300 billion stars. An interesting thing is that most of the stars have a solar system with planets around them like ours,  and believe me, scientists do whatever they can to find life on them.

P: But how do scientists and people like you want to find life in space, on other planets?

S: Believe me, we try very hard. In my job, I work with NASA scientists and astronomers.  We want to design and build tools that will help future generations explore other planets. I’m sure you know that space travels and space exploration have become very popular but it is still difficult to find any forms of life out there.

P: I see. Is there anything else that scientists and astronomers use or do?

S: Yes, scientists also use huge telescopes to observe the universe, but they need more powerful ones. They need telescopes that can detect water and life on other planets and we are working on that.

P. Do you think it’s possible to find life on other planets in  the future?

S: I guess, it will be possible.  I really believe  there’s life somewhere out there because why would life be only here on the planet Earth. We know that for life,  we need water and oxygen, so scientists need to look for planets which look similar to Earth, for planets which have atmosphere, water and oxygen.

P: Have scientists found planets which are similar to ours?

S: Yes, they have found a lot of planets in our galaxy which look like Earth, but they haven’t observed any  forms of life yet. The problem is that some of the planets are hotter than ours, and others have weak gravity or too little air. But I hope that the future generations will find life on other planets.

P: I would like that, too. It would be so nice to know that we are not alone and maybe meet other people or forms of life.  Thank you very much for an interesting interview and for coming.
