Do you want to start your own business and be your own boss? No problem! This is an exciting journey and this video will show you how to start. We’ll keep it simple and fun. You will just have to follow a few steps.
Best businesses are the ones built on passion so the first step is discovering what you are passionate about. How? It’s easy. Make a list of things you're good at or enjoy doing. This can be simple things like taking care of your younger brother or sister. Maybe you love animals and enjoy long walks? Or maybe you have an artistic talent like drawing or singing? You can try to turn these activities into a business. To begin, you don’t need a detailed business plan, just something that makes you happy.
Do you remember Lily? She wanted to help her grandad and she came up with a brilliant idea. You, too, can look around and chat with people to find out if there's something they need – a service or product. Maybe there’s something that could make their lives easier? Or, perhaps, your idea could solve their problems?
Now that you have a brilliant idea, let’s think about how to make it a reality. What do you need to start your business? If it's babysitting, do a first aid course. For cutting grass, you might need to rent a lawnmower. For coding or drawing, consider a new computer or art supplies. But remember, spend money only on what's necessary. You don’t need a lot of money to start your business.
It’s time to let people know about your business. You can do it in a few different ways. Start a website or use social media. If you make cakes, share photos to show people what you do. If you sing at parties, record a short video to give people a quick look at your abilities. Ask customers for comments and reviews. People like to know that you have satisfied customers. For local services, leave leaflets in your neighborhood—at schools, shops, and bus stops. You can also go to some local events to talk to people and let them get to know you in person. Ask your friends and family to recommend your products and services to others.
Let’s talk about money in more detail. We’ve said that you don’t need much to start. Remember, though, that creating a budget is very important. Plan what you need to buy and make sure you have some funds for advertising. You can ask your family to be your first investors. Use your pocket money, too. Set a financial goal, but remember, it's not just about money. Building a customer base and collecting positive reviews are important, too.
Some people will probably ask you, “Why are you doing this? Isn’t it easier to just take some pocket money from your parents and have lots of free time to spend it?” They might be right, but, on the other hand, think about all the pluses of having your own business. You will learn how to make decisions and manage your time. You will meet a lot of people and create friendships that can be really useful in the future. You will practise finding creative solutions to problems that will appear in your professional life.
To sum up, listen to people who give you positive advice and be patient. It takes time to build a successful business! There are many owners of huge companies who started young. Maybe you will be one of them in the future.
