The National Clean Off Your Desk Day is on the second Monday of January each year. This day gives you a chance to start your new year with a clean and organised study area. It is supposed to have a positive influence on your work and help you become a better and more efficient student.
Make sure you declutter and tidy up regularly. A messy and cluttered desk is distracting and makes it difficult to focus. At least once a week, get rid of all unnecessary items, put away things which don’t belong to your desk, and organise your supplies. When it comes to empty cups, make it a habit to take them back to the kitchen immediately. After all, other members of the family may need them too!
Even if your desk is small, have a designated study area. Dedicate a specific part of your desk for studying and remove all the distractors from there. Unless you need them for your assignment, make sure this area is free from electronic devices which can unnecessarily draw your attention. This will help you get into the studying mindset.
Use organisers and containers to keep your supplies in order. For example, use a pen holder to keep your writing utensils together, and a tray organiser to segregate your files and assignments. You will save even more time if you label the trays.
Keep frequently used items within easy reach. You will not waste time looking for them or getting up every time you need to find them. You can put small items, such as paper clips, rubber bands, or those which you don’t need all the time like glitter or glue sticks, in your drawer.
Keep your desk well‑lit. Long hours spent over books or in front of your computer can strain your eyes. If possible, position your desk near a window to take advantage of the natural light as much as you can. Then use a desk lamp, which should be placed on the opposite side to the hand which you normally use for writing. This is to avoid your hand casting a shadow across your work.
Add some personal touch to your desk to create a space that you enjoy spending time in. Some photos, posters, or plants can make you feel comfortable. Don’t overdo it, though. Too many decorative items can be distracting and will make you daydream instead of doing your job.
