Teens and Smartphones in the UK
A Digital Habits Report
By Digital Youth Magazine
Today’s teenagers can’t imagine life without their smartphones. A new report from UK Teens Online 2025 shows how young people in Britain use their phones every day and what they really think about their screen time.
📱 How much time do they spend online?
According to the study, British teenagers spend an average of four hours a day on their smartphones. Most of them use their phones after school and before going to bed. Around 70 percent say they check social media every fifteen minutes, and half of them admit they find it hard to stop scrolling.
💬 What do they do on their phones?
The most popular apps among UK teens are TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. Many also use WhatsApp or Snapchat to stay in touch with friends. Interestingly, some teenagers use their phones for studying – for example, to search information, watch educational videos, or do online homework.
😴 Do phones affect their sleep?
Almost 60 percent of students say they often go to sleep later because they use their phones in bed. Teachers and parents are worried that late‑night screen time causes tiredness and problems with concentration. However, some teens say that listening to music or podcasts before sleep helps them relax.
🌿 A healthy digital balance
Experts recommend trying a short digital detox every week – for example, leaving your phone in another room during meals or turning off notifications for one evening. Many schools in the UK are now teaching digital hygiene – how to use technology safely and wisely.
