Who is Malala?
Joanna Sobierska‑Paczesny Who is Malala?

“I Am Afraid,” confessedconfessconfessed the blogger Gul Makai in her first blog entry on the BBC website, on January 3rd, 2009. You can’t help but admire her, when she talks about going to school despite a Taliban edict prohibiting girls from doing so. The little girl was one of the few who refusedrefused [refuse] (verb)refused to complycomply (verb)comply, thus putting herself at risk. “I’ll kill you,” she heard from a man on her way home.

Unbelievably, and probably partially thanks to her father, a social activist, the blogger found the courage to stand up forstand up for something (verb)stand up for what she believed. She wrote more entries after the “I Am Afraid” one and spoke outspoke out [speak out]spoke out publicly, advocating for girls’ right to education, knowing very well that it would put a target on her back. She recalls that her father saw many of his fellow activists dead or imprisoned. Yet this determineddetermineddetermined girl never backed downbacked down [back down] (verb)backed down until one fateful day that changed everything… Who is she?

I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban, she says about herself in the title of her autobiography. You might know her as Malala Yousafzai, the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate. These two titles tell you what a remarkableremarkableremarkable young person she is.

In 2012, Malala was 15 and, despite the Taliban’s reign of terrorreign of terrorreign of terror, she was still attending school. The school bus was taking her and her friends home when it was stopped by a masked gunman. He got on, and looking around the petrifiedpetrifiedpetrified faces demanded “Who is Malala?” Then, he shot the girl in the head.

Malala survived, but it took months of surgeries and rehabilitation in an English hospital to get her back on her feetback on her feet [back on one’s feet]back on her feet.
