I’m an averageaverage woman with an ordinaryordinary life. I’ve always been the regularregular type. People have always liked me and I’ve been mildlymildly successful - not a high‑flierhigh‑flier, but almost never the last at anything. I’ve always wanted to be special, though. And this is how my Instagram charadecharade started.
I started slowly. I alteredaltered some second‑handsecond‑hand clothes and posted selfies posing with my sweet little pupperpupper. Sometimes, I asked my husband to snap a photosnap a photo of me and my new style as ifas if by accident. He wasn’t very enthusiastic, but the poor blokebloke loves me more than anything, so he did what he could. Anyway, I added a filterfilter, a catchycatchy captioncaption, a few viralviral hashtags and posted regularly.
WheneverWhenever I visited a cafe with a friend, I took snapshotssnapshots of both our plates. I made breakfast for my husband and rearrangedrearranged it on four different plates. I took photos of them in four different places in our house to maintain the illusionmaintain the illusion of eating various fancyfancy meals regularly. Lastly, my friend, who works in a locallocal restaurant, sometimes let me photograph the food that they prepared for other clients. I was desperate to show my high‑lifehigh‑life.
Hard work paid offpaid off. I was gaining a few followersfollowers every day. These weren’t big numbers, but because there was so much contentcontent on my page, people kept coming back. I was exhausted, but I was also addicted toaddicted to all the comments, likes, and fame. I was a micro influencerinfluencer and people in my city sometimes recognized me. They asked me questions like “What was that yellow sprinklesprinkle on your granola yesterday?” I always evadedevaded such questions because most of the time I didn’t know. It wasn’t even my granola in the photoin the photo.
It wasn’t that bad at first, but I wanted more. Instead of simple filters, I started to retouchretouch my photos. I was slimmer, taller, and more beautiful. My poor dog had to wear all those funny outfitsoutfits even though he hated it and other dogs avoided him in the dog park. I also added clickbaitclickbait captions, so that people would interactinteract with my photos more. I wanted them to like me and subscribesubscribe to my accountaccount. I wanted to stop being ordinary and reach the top.
However, I reached the bottom. I realized it when I croppedcropped the photo so that my husband wasn’t in it. I cropped outcropped out the single person I love most. At that point, I had over 10K10K followers and was already using botsbots to like other people’s photos and respond to my fans. Was it even me living on instagram? I had my doubtsI had my doubts.
The decisivedecisive moment came when my husband told me to make a choice. It was him or the Instagram accountaccount. This is when I saw the truth. We hardly spoke. He was living with an empty shellshell of a person.
I quit just before Christmas. I remember losing a big sponsoredsponsored contract for a sweater adad. It was a lot of money, but it was worth it. In exchange, I saved my marriage, and possibly, also my soul.
