Fantasy Sports
Zuzanna Kościuk Fantasy Sports

What to do if you enjoy sports, socialisingsocialisingsocialising, and managing things? The answer is easy: try fantasy sports.

They are online prediction gamesonline prediction games [online prediction game]online prediction games in which you assembleassembleassemble an imaginaryimaginaryimaginary or virtual team of real‑world players. Such a team competescompetecompetes based on statistical performancestatistical performancestatistical performance in real matches. In other words, you get special points if a player does well in real life and you’ve got him on your fantasy sports team. Of course, the more the points, the higher the chance of winning against other teams. That is to say: you become a team managerteam managerteam manager who follows real‑life matches and adds, dropsdrops [drop] (verb)drops, tradestrades [trade] (verb)trades, and sells player avatarsplayer avatars [player avatar]player avatars to keep winning.

Why is fantasy sport so popular? One of the biggest drawsdraws [draw] (noun)draws is the aforementionedaforementionedaforementioned management aspectmanagement aspectmanagement aspect. Instead of being a passive observerpassive observerpassive observer of sports, you can use your extensive knowledgeextensive knowledgeextensive knowledge to become an active participantactive participantactive participant. All of the decisions you make have consequences and thus, it is a challenge to ensureensureensure your team wins. It makes fantasy sports especially popular. Another reason so many people love fantasy sports is the socialisation aspectsocialisation aspectsocialisation aspect. Since most of the games nowadays are online, you can compete against your friends or family, and who doesn’t like a friendly competition? Should you want something even more challenging, you could, of course, play against complete strangers. If you don’t know your opponent, it’s more difficult to predict their actions throughout the season.

On the subject of fantasy sports, did you know that they aren’t a new invention at all? The internet made them mainstreammainstreammainstream, but people have always liked managing and socialising. In fact, the first instancefirst instancefirst instance of fantasy sports can be traced backtraced back to sth [trace back to sth]traced back to the early 1800s! At that time, however, the games were extremely different from what we know today. Players would simulatesimulatesimulate games by propellingpropelling [propel]propelling coins into slots on a wooden board rather than follow any real‑life statistics. It wasn’t until the 1950s though that fantasy sports started resemblingstarted resembling [start resembling]started resembling contemporary contests. That is to say, fantasy sports have come a long way, and should you want to try them, they’d be much easier than they were in the past. Nowadays, people play for the entire season using real‑timereal‑timereal‑time, easily availableeasily availableeasily available statistics instead of meeting for a few‑hour game and compiling statistics or relying on what already happened. Still, it shows that we’ve always enjoyed this type of entertainment!
