Hi Mark,
Thanks for your email. It’s funny that your mum is worried about the weightweightweight of your schoolbag. My mum is exactly the same! She doesn’t want me to carry too many things in it. She says a heavy school bag is very bad for my spinespinespine. We read on the internet that many students carrycarrycarry a school bag that weighsweighs [weigh] (verb)weighs as much as 6 kilos!
Last weekend, mum asked me to take out all the stuffstuffstuff from my schoolbag. We sorted everything outsorted out [sort out]sorted everything out make sure I don’t carry things I don’t really needneed (verb)need. This is what we found:
twenty crayons – mum says I only need one from each colour;
eight pens - that’s too many! I only need two;
three different sharpenerssharpeners [sharpener]sharpeners - two of them were brokenwere broken [be broken]were broken, so I can’t use them anymore;
four dried outdried out dried outmarker pensmarker pens [marker pen] (BrE)marker pens - I didn’t know they were at the bottombottombottom of my schoolbag;
fifteen colourful paper clipspaper clips [paper clip]paper clips - we discovered them in one of the forgottenforgottenforgottenpocketspockets [pocket]pockets of my pencil case.
As you can see I had a lot of brokenbrokenbroken or unnecessaryunnecessaryunnecessary things. My school bag is much lighter now. I also know I need a few more things: a pair of new scissors, some sellotapesellotapesellotape, and a folderfolderfolder for my art classes drawings.
You probably think I threw awaythrew away [throw away]threw away all the broken things into my rubbish binrubbish binrubbish bin. Nothing of that sortnothing of that sortNothing of that sort! I need all of them for the new club I joined at my school. It’s The CreativecreativeCreative Club. We meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. The classes are about making new things with the school suppliesschool suppliesschool supplies we already have. We can’t buy any new supplies, so we have to be really creative.
Just listen to what we created last time! We made a modelmodelmodel of a crocodile lake! We used old scissors as crocodiles, and pens, crayons, and pencils as the fence. An old ruler was a bridgebridgebridge over the lake and the eraserserasers [eraser]erasers were stones sticking outsticking out [stick out]sticking out from the water. That was real fun!
Our model is on displayon displayon display in the school corridorcorridorcorridor. Our teacher Mr. Stones says he wants to take some photos of the model to put them on the school website! Our model is the only one on display. Henry and James, my classmatesclassmates [classmate]classmates, made a model of a forest with some old glue sticksglue sticks [glue stick]glue sticks, paper clips and sticky notessticky notes [sticky note]sticky notes. Next week, we are planning to make some car models with these plastic ringsrings [ring]rings which you normally throw away when you use all the tapetapetape. I can’t wait!
What about your schoolbag? How heavy is it?
I’m waiting for your reply. Hope to see you at John’s birthday party!
Best,
Tim
