Ela Borowiec Green Challenge Week

Hi Guys! I was a bit busy because we had a Green Challenge Week at school last week. It is an event when we all focus on what we can do to protect the environmentprotect the environmentprotect the environment. We organise it every year, always at the end of March. Why then? Because a great global initiativeinitiativeinitiative called Earth Hour takes place on the last Saturday of March. People from over 100 countries turn all the lights off for one hour in order to remind us that we should save energysave energysave energy and be responsible forresponsible forresponsible for our sustainablesustainablesustainable future. This year we had to make a presentation on environmental issuesenvironmental issues [environmental issue]environmental issues for other students and do a week‑longweek‑longweek‑long green challenge. We wanted to raise awarenessraise awarenessraise awareness of how important it is to take care of our planet.

First, there were presentations to make. There were many different topics on environmental issues to choose from, like endangered speciesendangered speciesendangered species, air pollutionair pollutionair pollution, consumerismconsumerismconsumerism, renewable energyrenewable energyrenewable energy, climate change, 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle), or the life of plastic. Our class had to prepare tipstips [tip]tips on what we can do to go paperlessgo paperlessgo paperless. We decided to work on a tablet, of course. When we use less paperuse less paperuse less paper, we save treessave treessave trees. Do you have any ideas on what to do to go paperless?

Then we also had to complete a week‑long individual Green Challenge. That was real fun! We had to sort outsort outsort out our stuff, and choose and donate to charitydonate to charitydonate to charity the things we didn’t use anymore. I found my old teddies and stuffed animals that my mum took to an animal shelteranimal shelter. I also put away clothes I didn’t wear any more, three brand new bags my grandma bought me, my old laptop, and some toys. My mum took them to a local Immigrant Support CentreImmigrant Support CentreImmigrant Support Centre. It is a good feeling that you don’t throw things away but give them a second life.

Last but not leastlast but not leastLast but not least, there were the presentations. Each and every class put a lot of effort into preparing them and I learnt a lot. I loved the idea of reusing old shoes in order to make plant potsplant pots [plant pot]plant pots in the garden. I also realised how important it is that we recycle at home and try to avoidavoidavoid plastic as much as we can. I am definitely going to buy reusable bags for vegetables and fruit to use less plastic. Did you know that the life of a plastic bottle is probably 450 years? The funny thing is that we don’t know for sure because we don’t live that long.
