Bad Experiences: Lesson learnt!A. Stanley
Hi! My name’s Stanley and I’m a photographer. I travel a lot because I take pictures for different magazines. I must admitadmit, I’m quite experienced when it comes to being a globetrotterglobetrotter. If you ask me, I’ve got a few tips I can share with you. First of all, keep your travel arrangements to yourself, including your hotel reservations. You don’t have to keep everyone updated on social media about your travel plans. In this way your flat or house will be safe. AvoidAvoid travelling at night and hitchhiking. Inquire with your hotel manager, or your hosthost, about ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ places in the area. I find it a good idea to keep a copy of my passport, or any other crucial documents. I once had my passport stolen at the airport and it was much easier to confirmconfirm my identity. Use credits cards, but if you need cash, find a cash pointcash point, but use it only during the day when there are people around.

I’m a reporter for an international newspaper, which means I spend a lot of of time at airports. There are a few things you should remember about airport safetysafety. At the airport, keep an eyekeep an eye out for your luggage as it appears on the carouselcarousel. I remember someone taking my suitcase once by accident. Fortunately, I noticed that a stranger was pulling it towards the exit while I was leaving the toilet. Try not to exchangeexchange money at the airports as thievesthieves may be looking for people with large amounts of money. One last thing, I know that most people don’t print their tickets or boarding passesboarding passes, but they use travel apps instead and keep their digital documents there. However, I had a situation a few years back when my phone went dead and I couldn’t scan my boarding cardboarding card. I was lucky that a man behind me had the same kind of phone and let me use his charger for a few minutes so I could use my phone in the end.

I travel a lot on business, so I stay at different hotels all around the world. I’ve learnt how to travel more safely after my incident with a hotel key. It had the name of the hotel and the room number written on it. I think it fell out of my pocket when I was leaving the hotel in the morning. Some thieves found it on the pavementpavement and looted my room. Unfortunately, I left my laptop on the bedside table and some money on the bed. Since then I’ve always stayed in hotels with swipe cardsswipe cards. So in case it gets stolen, the criminal will have no idea which hotel it’s from. Another thing you should remember is to use the chain or the lock when you come back to your room for the night. Never invite anyone into the room either!

I mostly travel on my own, so I need to be extra careful. There are some general rules I always followfollow to avoid nastynasty incidents. I always pretend that I know where I’m headedheaded even if I have no idea where I’m going. Once, a guy followedfollowed me to the beach because he had realised I wasn’t with anyone. Luckily, I met my friends there so he just vanishedvanished. I also dress in the same manner as the locals. Wearing a flashyflashy shirt with a camera hung over your neck is an obviousobvious sign that you’re a tourist. As much as I love my jewellery, I always take it off when I go sightseeingsightseeing. In this way I don’t draw attentiondraw attention to myself.
