British MonarchyA constitutional monarchyconstitutional monarchy is a system of government in which a monarch shares power with constitutionally organized government. Without a written constitution, Britain still follows laws and documented traditions that together bind the king. A vast majority of the world's monarchies today are constitutional ones. And the most recognisable monarch remains King Charles III.
In the UK, power is shared between King Charles III and the parliamentparliament. The parliament, headed by the Prime Minister, carries out executive ordersexecutive orders, while the King must approve of these ordersapprove of these orders with one of his rights of consultationrights of consultation.
The monarch has a lot of constitutional duties such as the approvalapproval of parliamentary legislationlegislation, receiving state visits to and from other heads of state or receiving the credentialsreceiving the credentials of foreign ambassadors. The monarch is also the head of the armed forcesarmed forces; the head of the judiciaryjudiciary; and the head of the civil service. Since Henry VIII, who was the king in the 16th century, the British monarch has been the Head of the Church of England. Finally, the King is the Head of the CommonwealthCommonwealth, and the head of state in 15 of the other 53 Commonwealth member countries.
A constitutional monarch is the one above party politics and focuses on national unity. What is more, the King often gives impartialimpartial non‑political support to different types of organizations and charities. It would not be possible if he were a political figure. This unifyingunifying role of the royal family spreads through the monarch’s annual Christmas BroadcastChristmas Broadcast, attendance at ceremonial events like Trooping the ColourTrooping the Colour, and the congratulatorycongratulatory telegrams to couples marking their Diamond Wedding anniversaryDiamond Wedding anniversary.
The opponents, on the other hand, claim that the public should be able to control the Head of State and have the instruments to check or even discredit the monarch. None of this is possible if the head of state is a dynastic monarch. The cost of the Royal Family has always been a controversial issue. At over £80 million per year, the opponents argue that the British King is the most expensive monarch in Europe. In comparison, the Spanish monarchy is said to cost £6.15m, and Swedes reportedly pay £11.6m for their monarchy.
Although the true power of the monarch is restricted, the King is undoubtedly a cultural and traditional backbonebackbone to the nation. His influence is great and the support of the people they have, are some of the highest in the world.
