Grades in the UK and the USGradingGrading in the United Kingdom
GradesGrades are a bit different in every country in the UK. Sometimes they’re different in different schools, too. England, Northern IrelandNorthern Ireland, and WalesWales use similar grades. ScotlandScotland uses different ones. Students’ grades can be lettersletters, numbers, or pointspoints.
In the UK, students take examsexams when they’re 7, 11, 14, and 16. Each exam has different types of grades. For example, younger children (7–11 years old) get points. When students are 16, they taketake the GCSEGCSE exam. This exam ends the secondary school. The grades from this exam are different in every country. In England, students get grades in the form ofin the form of numbers from 1 to 9. In Northern Ireland and Wales, they get grades in the form of letters from A to G.
Grading in the United States
In the US, every school uses the same grades. Grades in the US are letters. The best grade is A. Then, there’s B, C, D, and F. D is the last passing gradepassing grade. If a student gets an F, they need to retakeretake the test.
Students in the US get grades for different assignmentsassignments and tests. Teachers give those grades to parents every few months. By the end of the year, teachers give one final grade for the whole coursecourse. An A means someone was an excellent student. An F means a student failedfailed the class.
In the final year of high school, American teenagers take the SATSAT. The SAT is an exam you take to go to university. The SAT doesn’t have grades. It has points. Each student can get a maximum of 1600 points.
