Every text editor has a default file formatfile formatfile format in which it saves documents. However text editors can save their documents in many different alternative file formats. One of the most popular is PDF.
Portable Document Format (PDF) is a file formatfile formatfile format developed by one of the software companies for presenting and printing text and image documents. It has become very popular thanks to its additional features and many advantages.

A file saved as PDF can be viewed by a special programme, called a PDF reader. A basic programme provided free of charge which can be used on most platforms is Adobe Reader. Alternative programmes, which can view and even edit files in this format, are also available.

The options of saving/exporting a file to the PDF format
In both cases it is possible to select an option of savingsavingsaving/exporting which enables e.g. choosing the pages of a document which are to be saved as PDF or encrypting the PDF file with a password.

The options of saving/exporting a file to the PDF format
In order to view PDF files, you must have a free programme installed on your computer, the so called PDF reader (a free viewer of documents in the PDF format). To directly modify a PDF file, you usually need a special software. In newer versions of popular text editors it is possible not only to save documents as PDF, but also to edit them.

Exercise 2
Create two documents in a text editor. Insert any three pages of text into one file (you can use the text on epodreczniki.pl). In the other, insert at least two images into every of its three pages. Save both documents in the default format of the text editor. Then save them as PDF files. Note the options of savingsavingsaving PDF files, you can optimize file sizefile sizefile size. Check if choosing the minimum size option significantly impacts the size of the files. Which files are the smallest and which are the largest? Does the content of a file influence its size?
