One of the advantages of… and one of the disadvantages is…

I think I wouldn’t like to take part in a marathon or half‑marathon. I don’t run on a regular basis and when I have to run somewhere I feel exhausted. I could go to a big city and be a spectator, though.
One of the advantages of taking part in a marathon in a popular place is the fact that you can admire famous landmarks. One of the disadvantages is the fact that there are so many people everywhere and the streets can get crowded. The city is closed for some time while the marathon is taking place. It can be an inconvenience for the local people.

Exercise 8

Local authorities want to hear from its inhabitants if it would be a good idea to organise a marathon next year. In the forum entry to the students of your school:

explain why your town would be a good place to organise such an event;
write what the runners could do after finishing the race;
suggest the best month to organise it;
describe the benefit to the city of organising the marathon and mention the possible inconvenience this would cause.

Your forum entry should be 100–150 words long.

Hi there,
What’s new? I wonder if you have heard that our local authorities are considering organising a marathon in our town! What a brilliant idea!

I think that our town would be a great place to do this. First of all, It has a lot of interesting monuments, which participants of the race could visit and admire. Secondly, uneven surfaces and nearby hills make the run challenging.

After the run, participants could enjoy some local food at cafes. They can also relax by the river to recover after such a great physical effort.

The best month to organise it would be early May because the trees and bushes start to bloom and the town is not as dusty as in the summer.

To my mind, the town will greatly benefit from organising such an event. Visitors may get attracted by the local monuments and breathtaking views. Moreover, they’ll support local businesses. However, with a huge number of participants looking for accommodation the streets could be a bit crowded, which could cause chaos for some locals.
