More and more young people travel to faraway places to get to know new cultures and customs. Some travellers consider making a living from it and becoming travel writers. Write an article (200–250 words) for the school magazine, where you describe positive and negative aspects of this profession.

Armchair travel or not at all?

Many young people are passionate travellers who love visiting new places and meeting people. Some even consider becoming travel writers. Undoubtedly, this profession may sound tempting, but remember that not all that glitters is gold.

Being a writer requires constant self‑development. Getting and honing skills is a must. Not only do you have to be proficient at writing and speaking but you also need to know how to edit, format, and record videos. Educating yourself is an absolutely wonderful thing in this job. It is obvious that it is strictly related to moving, so for people who love to be on the run, it seems to be a dream come true. Reaching far‑off destinations and, if lucky enough, being covered by a good employer, is promising, isn’t it?

I do not want to worry anyone who wishes to become a travel writer, but there is something worth emphasising. As alluring as it may sound, choosing this profession as your main source of income might turn out to be a bitter experience. It is a competitive market, so it is hard to break through. You should also be aware of the salary you will be paid. The sad fact is that publishers will pay you peanuts for an article, at least at the beginning. In this case, it is worth having a steady income from another source.

Do not give up on your dream, though. Work hard and be persistent in achieving your goals!
