Read the text about buying a birthday gift and decide which option is right. Hi everyone! Let me tell you something. Last week my bosom friend decided to surprise me with a special gift. She wanted to buy something extraordinary, “out of this world,” as she explained to me. She had been to some malls and markets but she couldn’t find anything special so she finally decided to try online shopping. She browsed dozens of strange websites with unusual gadgets and eventually submitted an order for super funny “pills against stupidity”. What a joke, right? She didn’t have much time so she asked for an overnight home delivery. Everything went smoothly, as the very next day she got the parcel. To her amazement, the package was full of hair bands! She panicked at first but after taking a deep breath she sat in front of her computer and typed an unpleasant email to the store. She made a complaint about the wrong product, said how dissatisfied she was and asked for an immediate exchange. It turned out she had no troubles getting those stupid pills the next day. The store policy is solid and I think, in the end, it is worth recommending. My best friend came with a huge cardboard box. You can imagine her broad smile when she was giving me this gift wrapped in 15 different newspapers. It took me ages to unwrap it. I opened the box and found it – medicine for stupidity. She was rolling on the carpet laughing out loud and screaming what a great sense of humour she had. Well, it’s time I got a surprise for her… I’m starting to look for something… foolish. Exercise 8

Write an email of 100‑150 words to a friend in the UK. You have found an online shop which has a very wide range of products and you want to share what purchase you have made. In your email:

  • describe the gift you were looking for online and for whom it was;

  • write what you eventually bought and in which shop;

  • describe your friend's reaction and what her/his family said;

  • invite your friend to spend the weekend with you and suggest a shopping trip.
