Read the text with five missing sentences. In each gap (6.1–6.5) write a letter that corresponds to the missing sentence (A–F), so the text makes logical sense. One sentence doesn’t fit with any gap. I had never considered participating in a medical trial before I got diagnosed with a serious illness. (6.1) 1. E, 2. C, 3. F, 4. D, 5. A, 6. B I actively looked for trials to join, answered adverts in newspapers, newsletters, and notice boards. After some time, I was urgenty admitted to a hospital. Just then, when I felt most vulnerable and worried, I was approached by a research team organising a medical trial related to my condition. They provided me with a leaflet, which really wasn’t sufficient for me to make a decision. (6.2) 1. E, 2. C, 3. F, 4. D, 5. A, 6. B After having read that, I decided that I would take part. At first, they had to check the exclusion criteria which state who cannot take part in the trial. Luckily, I didn’t match that category. After that, I underwent a series of blood tests to determine which group I should be assigned to. (6.3) 1. E, 2. C, 3. F, 4. D, 5. A, 6. B This meant that neither me nor the doctors were informed whether I was in a control group receiving a placebo, or in the experimental group. I took the provided pills for a few months under the care of the research team. (6.4) 1. E, 2. C, 3. F, 4. D, 5. A, 6. B After that time, I was sent to a series of blood tests again. (6.5) 1. E, 2. C, 3. F, 4. D, 5. A, 6. B My symptoms disappeared and I could come back to my normal life. I still remain under the care of my GP, but the prospects for a full recovery are good.

A – The test was double blind.
B – So I replied saying that I, in principle, was happy to take part, but I’d like the trial organisers to send me a copy of the full protocol.
C – This was a blind test.
D – However, when the available treatment suggested by my GP failed, I decided to seek for other options.
E – As it turned out, I made a measurable improvement.
F – In fact, they were extremely helpful and we managed to build a great bond.
