Exercise 3
Mom: First of all, I 1. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise the world. Completely. Everything around you 2. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise: your phone, your social media, me, the cat, the TV. Everything. You don’t want to 3. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise between all these things, because you actually never fully focus on any of it.
Mika: I can’t 4. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise with Fluffy. He helps me study.
Mom: Does he? How much time did you spend playing with him at your desk today?
Mika: A bit. But he was sooo cute, he was playing with my pens, throwing them off the desk. You should have seen it. It was so funny. I made a video and sent it to Megs.
Mom: See. That’s how you 5. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise from work. There’s always something.
Mika: Mom, it’s not something. It’s Fluffy. And he sits with you when you work, too!
Mom: Yes, but I don’t play with him. He curls up next to the computer and sleeps through the whole thing.
Mika: Well, it’s not my fault…
Mom: Yes, it is. And that’s another thing. You need to take responsibility for your work and lack of it. Give yourself an hour to work on something. Remember to 6. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise. And stop looking for excuses. Just say “I didn’t focus enough, because of this or that” and next time try to avoid it.
Mika: But how???
Mom: By turning off your phone and the internet. By kicking Fluffy out for an hour. By putting an “I’m working” sign on your door. Whatever you need to do. Trust me, if you 7. 1. keep track of your progress, 2. mutter, 3. demands your attention, 4. shut off, 5. do away, 6. distract yourself, 7. divide your attention, 8. put your mind to, 9. minimise it, it will work.
