Spreading through several states of the USA, it boasts the largest number of tornadoes in the word. One of them, the Tri-State tornado, holds the record of path length, duration and the fastest forward speed. The Daulatpur–Saturia, 1989, however, remains the record of the deadliest single tornado in history.

Tu uzupełnij     with work, I’ve managed to find some time to visit the southern states of the USA last year. I decided to go there as the area is well known for huge tornadoes and I was keen on seeing one. My friends were terrified when they found out about my trip and they wanted me to change my plans. “What's all this     2. Tu uzupełnij     all about?" I thought, as I had arranged precautions to stay safe even in case of a big tornado. When I arrived in Missouri, the forecast predicted no storms or tornadoes for the next 2 weeks. On top of this, the local storm chaser who was going to show me the best locations for spotting tornadoes did not turn up.     3. “Tu uzupełnij,”    I thought. Despite these problems, I went on a trip from Missouri to Illinois in a car all by myself. After a few hours of driving, I suddenly saw a lot of dust over the road and the wind grew stronger. Even though I was prepared for the view, the massive twister suddenly appearing right in front of me was a     4. Tu uzupełnij.     Fortunately, I had enough time to turn around and drive back. It was a terribly close shave, though! I don’t think I will ever forget this adventure and go twister hunting again.

Read the adventure holiday advert with five missing sentences. In each gap (6.1–6.5), write a letter that corresponds to the missing sentence (A–F), so the text makes logical sense. One sentence doesn’t fit with any gap. Our travel agency offers extraordinary holidays in areas where you will experience the most extreme weather conditions. If you are up for the adventure, the number one choice is South and North America.     (6.1) Tu uzupełnij     The starting location is called Lake Maracaibo, where there are hardly any days without a thunderstorm. From there, you will move through the USA following Tornado Alley, where you will be most likely to observe a twister.     (6.2) Tu uzupełnij     Your next destination, Death Valley, is officially the hottest spot on Earth, with temperatures reaching 50 °C!     (6.3) Tu uzupełnij     Finally, you will get to South Dakota, where the world-largest hail was recorded.     (6.4) Tu uzupełnij     If you fancy snow, you may extend your trip and take the option of visiting Washington state.     (6.5) Tu uzupełnij     Don’t forget your skiing equipment should you choose to go there. A – In such scorching weather, you may need some time for acclimatisation, so take it easy. B – The downpours can be heavy there, so don’t forget your umbrella! C – The chunks of ice can be as large as 20cm in diameter, so watch out should you notice them. D – Beginning your journey in Venezuela, you will witness the most lightning bolts per square kilometre. E – The area experienced the highest precipitation of 29m in 1998! F – Be cautious whenever you notice sudden gusts of wind and do not attempt to get too close to this dangerous weather phenomenon if you see one.
