I agree with this statement. To my mind, the response to winning and losing tells a lot about a person. When people lose their temper and start to provoke, it’s a sign of no respect towards all the others involved in the event. The way you react to a lost game somehow proves how much you value the effort that all competitors put in their struggle.

I don’t agree with the statement. To my mind, when being under stress and adrenaline, you will never know for sure how you will react. Emotions may overshadow your common sense and you might be surprised with it yourself.

The Art of Sportsmanship

Have you ever heard about the unsportsmanlike conduct of an unsatisfied player who couldn’t cope with their losing the game, making it an unpleasant experience for all the participants of the event? Fair play is a very hard lesson but still it should be expected from sportsmen.

Shouldn’t it be that doing your best and fighting with weaknesses already make you a winner? Fair play requires team spirit, tolerance, solidarity, and care. Let me introduce you to Eugenio Monti, an Italian bobsledder, who makes a beautiful example of sportsmanship and helped the British team fix the sled during the race. Thanks to his kindness, they won while he got the bronze.

Obviously, it is hard to combat your stress when you want to win. In sports you can either win or lose, there is no third option. But HOW you do it matters. A good winner never hesitates to congratulate their opponents and always shows respect not only to competitors, but also to the officials, referees and spectators. A good winner adheres to integrity, self‑control, and honesty. A good loser, on the other hand, restrains themselves from losing their temper. They will never toss their equipment or resort to verbal abuse.

Don’t you think that fair play should be taught in nurseries and schools? Children should know: “It is your response to winning and losing that makes you a winner or a loser.”
