Exercise 5

Study the short texts and match the speakers with the correct things which help them learn.

Amaya: I learn in an all girls’ school. Our building is outdated, we have old desks and chairs and we learn in a traditional way. Our teachers give lectures and we have to learn things by heart. We don’t have access to computers or the internet. The teachers write things on the board with chalk and we copy them in our notebooks. But I’m happy I can study and gain knowledge like that because the atmosphere isn’t highly competitive.

Tony: My school is quite modern and free of charge. We mostly learn new things through practice in a lab. We conduct experiments and if things don’t work, we try hard to find a way to make them better. It’s the best way for me to learn. I know that my teachers are strict but they are also fair and when they evaluate our work, they look at how we did things and assess the process of thinking, not if the experiment was successful.

Sarah: Our teachers give us a lot of projects and we give many presentations. It’s not only about rote learning because we need to show what we have learnt to the rest of the class and then answer the questions. Last time I talked about the human body and I had to show where the most important bones are and what they are called. I hope one day I will graduate from medical school because I aim high.

Lee: Although our school has access to the internet, and uses cutting edge equipment like interactive boards and learning applications, I still learn best when I read things from books and I wouldn’t like to get rid of this method. Reading texts and making notes enhances my studying and makes me accomplish my aims. So you will often find me looking through books in a library. There is a huge one in our school. But due to the pandemic, the opening hours have been cut short.
