HOMELESS, BUT STILL HUMAN

„I am Ann, I am 18 and I have been homeless for a year now,” – this is how a young woman started her story, which we heard during a meeting at a local homeless shelter we visited last Wednesday. I must admit that it gave us a new perspective on the life of the homeless.

A person living on the street has to face a lot of problems. Firstly, it is essential to find some food or somehow earn money to buy it. Additionally, you have to find a place to sleep and make sure you are safe, which is not easy, especially if you are a woman. Taking a shower or getting medicine if you are ill are luxuries that few of the vagrants can afford.

Being labelled a street urchin is definitely tough, however the government can undertake some actions. The first idea is to build permanent shelters for people who cannot afford renting even the most inexpensive flats. Another good solution is to make soup kitchens widely available to those in need. Job training programs and health services for homeless people struggling with addictions or mental illnesses should also be offered.

There is no doubt that when you are down and out your life is a misery. Sleeping rough or panhandling for food is your reality, however with governmental help of free housing and meals, it is possible to ease the life of a homeless person like Ann, or even make it right again.
