Not all young people are interested in current affairs and global problems, but I strongly believe that all of them should be encouraged to show more interest in both. Young people in particular should be taught that, whether they like it or not, the world of politics is about them, too. Sooner or later decisions made by politicians will affect their life directly, so teenagers should know how to critically assess politicians’ programmes and how to consciously choose their representatives. MUNs are great opportunities to learn about the mechanisms of big politics in a safe, controlled environment.

Exercise 8

Your friend has just been selected to take part in MUN for the first time. You are an experienced MUNer. Write an email to your friend to share your tips for the event. In your email:

congratulate your friend on being selected to participate in MUN;
describe how participants have to prepare for MUN;
give two tips on how to write a good MUN Position Paper;
explain the benefits of participating in the conference and express your hope that he/she will enjoy the event.

Your email should be 100–150 words long.

Hope you’re fine. I’ve heard that you’re going to take part in MUN next month. I’ve done it many times so I can tell you a bit about preparations and benefits from this event.

Congratulations on being selected to represent your school! I’m sure the competition was fierce.

You should start by checking the Background Guide for instructions on how to research your country and compile the required documents. Read a lot about your allocated country. Start early since it is a lot of work.

Prior to the conference, write a Position Paper. To compile a perfect one, remember to include only relevant information and support your ideas with strong evidence. Avoid plagiarism at all costs.

MUN is a great experience. It will boost your confidence and give you a chance to practise your research and analytical and public speaking skills. You will learn a lot about current affairs and global challenges. You will also meet lots of interesting people and make friends with them. I hope you will enjoy your time at the conference!
