I think we should use less fossil fuels because they produce harmful chemicals that can damage the environment. Also, they will run out one day in the future. In addition, they are a very expensive source of energy.
Using wind energy doesn’t contribute to global warming and pollution. It can be cheaper than fossil fuels and wind farms can be built in many places all over the world. Sea wind farms are particularly efficient as the wind is strongest at sea.
Onshore wind farms are noisy and residents often complain about them. In addition, they can spoil the natural landscape and kill birds and bats. Offshore farms don’t have these disadvantages, but they are easily damaged by salty water.

Exercise 8

Your family is eco‑conscious, so you have recently installed a wind turbine near your house. Write an email to a friend from England about using wind energy. In the email:

inform your friend when and why your family started to use wind energy;
inform your friend about the benefits of the wind energy in your house;
explain in what way wind energy benefits the environment;
encourage your friend to start using wind power.

Your answer should be 100–150 words long.

Dear Emma,

My family started using a small wind turbine near our house last month. My parents decided to buy one because they wanted to lower our electricity bills and be more green.

It helps to pump water from our well to the water tank. Also, the turbine produces electrical current that we can use to power our fridge, lights, and other things we use.

This way, we reduce our family’s carbon footprint. Wind turbines can be dangerous to birds, but we covered our turbine with a special metal net to keep birds away.

We are really happy to have that turbine. Why don’t you speak to your parents about the advantages of using wind power at home? You could also save some money and become more eco‑friendly!
