Read the text and highlight in purple the six words or phrases connected with ailments and symptoms related to your nose resulting from the common cold. I find infections caused by the pathogens of the common cold extremely difficult to bear. For example, a sore throat is the most frequent reason for my absences from school as I find it difficult to speak. I often use saline drops when i have a runny nose. This being said, I try to always stay away from zinc-based sprays, which are quite effective, but have some harmful side-effects. In addition to those, I find gargling salt water effective, but rarely use herbal remedies which aren’t scientifically proven to work.

When you have a cold remember to protect...
Firstly, I should try to balance my diet to make my immune system stronger. A healthy lifestyle is very important. For example I should try to exercise regularly.
If I catch a cold, I should try to get plenty of rest to fight the disease. I should sip lots of hot fluids to keep my airway passages moist. If I choose to use medication, I need to take the smallest effective doses.
It’s best to avoid taking antibiotics. They don’t work for the common cold! Also, careful about alternative medicine solutions as some of them have not been scientifically tested.
When you have a cold, remember to protect other people. Cover your face when sneezing, throw used paper tissues into a rubbish bin and wash your hands frequently.

Dear Maggie,
We had interesting workshops on how to tackle the common cold and the information we got is quite useful.
The common cold is caused by viruses. The symptoms include cough, sore throat, runny nose and sneezing.
Many people who have contracted the disease still go to school. This leads to the situation when they infect their healthy schoolmates and let the illness spread. Also, numerous patients ask doctors to prescribe antibiotics for this disease. Unfortunately antibiotics cannot cure the cold.
Now I know that I made a big mistake going to your birthday party when I had a cold.
Thanks to the workshop I understand how important prevention is in fighting the common cold. I have decided to review my diet and exercise more.
