Upholsterer
Upholstery is a craft which gives stylists a wide range of possibilities. Upholsterers deal with designing upholstery of furniture parts as well as upholstery in cars. They also perform finishing works in offices and apartments. Additionally, they deal with the upholstery of sports and medical equipment and preparation of the set decoration for cinema and theater stages. Their duties include not only manufacturing upholstered products and decoration, and repair and restoration of upholstered products, but also providing general upholstery services.
This profession requires certain skills such as manual dexterity, aesthetic sense, creativity, criticism, accuracy and patience. The knowledge of materials science, art and architecture is also necessary in the upholsterer's work. Spatial imagination is also invaluable.
In the profession of an upholsterer you need to constantly train in the field of technological innovations, designs, upholstery fabrics and styles. New trends, materials and patterns of furniture keep appearing. Upholstery is found everywhere. An upholsterer deals with both the renovation of old furniture and the creation and repair of new ones, including pieces of furniture such as armchairs and beds, curtains, drapes and rugs.
The reasons for not taking up this profession may include spine conditions and curvature disorders, some eye conditions and sight defects, colour vision defects, respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, heart defects, rheumatic diseases and musculoskeletal system diseases limiting the mobility of upper limbs, and hand skin conditions.
There is a big demand for upholsterers, both in this country and abroad. They will find employment in such places as companies producing and repairing upholstery, film set and stage design studios, production plants and furniture stores. They can work as customer service consultants in stores or warehouses or in their own businesses and design offices. Depending on the task, they work alone or in teams of 2‑3 people, in a standing, sitting or kneeling position.
