Stages of the lesson
Warm – up
Teacher asks the students what they know about history of football. If they do not know anything teacher may tell them that football is a very ancient game and was played in China at least 2500 years ago. The version now most common in the world has been played in England since the 12Indeks górny thth century.
A short discussion.Teacher divides the class into small groups (3–4 people).
Teacher introduces the topic and shows some pictures of well‑known footballers to the class. Teacher asks:
Who are the people?
Which players do you like/not like?
Who do they play for? EtcStudents work in groups. They discuss your pictures and questions. They also discuss the questions in student’s book (Before you listen, page 36)
Teacher encourages discussion with the whole class.
Main stage
Teacher asks students to look at the comprehension question on page 36 and to think about them while they listen to the tape.
Teacher plays the tape. Students listen to the tape and read the dialogue at the same time.
Teacher asks students to work in pairs. Teacher plays the tape again. Students work in pairs and answer the questions. Teacher checks the answers with the whole class.
Teacher writes on the board a sentence from the text:
Liverpool are playing at Anfield tomorrow night. Teacher asks the students what tense it is. (Present Continuous)
Teacher asks:
Is it now or in the future?
Is it definite?
Is it a plan or an arrangement? Teacher repeats the questions in L1 if necessary.
Students answer. Teacher helps if necessary.Teacher asks students to find another example in the dialogue (Who are they playing?)
Teacher elicits the answer (Barcelona).Teacher asks the class: Do you have any arrangements for this weekend? Teachers elicits some examples form the class:
I’m going to the cinema.
I’m seeing my friends.
I’m going to the dentist. Etc Teacher corrects gently if necessary.With books closed teacher elicits the names of the months from the class. Teacher checks pronunciation. If necessary teacher corrects gently. Teacher drills as necessary.
Memory bank on page 37, student’s book. Teacher looks at number 1 with the whole class.
Teacher makes sure the students know that they must include the and of :

Feedback – one pair writes the answers on the board, others check. Teacher monitors.
Checking the answers with the whole class.
Final stage
Ask students to tell you their own examples of dates – these might be birthdays etc.
Giving and explaining homework: Workbook, exercise 4 page 25. This exercise is for practising the use of Present Continuous for the future. Students have to complete a conversation.
