Hello everyone. It’s Vanessa from the Charity Chamber. Thanks again for subscribing to my charity podcast. It’s great to see the number of followers growing!

I’m happy so many of you would like to try and work as volunteers in a charity shop. This week I’m going to tell you about a regular day in the life of a shop assistant. I hope this will encourage you to try it yourself.

Well, I start work at 9.30, that’s half an hour earlier than the shop opens. The shop is always cleaned after we close so there’s not much to do in the morning. I start with checking the till, then I see if there’s anything new in stock and open the shop. We work from 10 am to 6 pm, but my shift is usually four hours long. If I work the morning shift, it’s usually just serving the customers. You have to smile, be polite and help the customers find the things they are looking for, so it really helps if you know the stock well.

If I work the afternoon shift at the end of the day, I have to prepare a special report on the till. It’s not very difficult and you get special till training anyway. After I close the shop, I arrange all the clothes on the rails and make sure the toys and the books haven’t been damaged during the day. Then I leave a note for a colleague who comes in the morning. That’s it. I don’t have to wash the floor or anything like this. There is a special cleaning service – they maintain most of the shops in our street.

Is the job boring? Nothing of that sort. When we have a quiet day, I prepare new price tags or read a book. We always have a lot of them in the shop and sometimes you can find real treasures. I like talking to customers and seeing them smile when they find something unique and affordable. It’s great to see happy customers and be aware that their money is going to support a good cause. It gives me a lot of satisfaction and works as my pay cheque!
