The task of the students before the lesson is to find the information about PDF documents.

At the beginning of the lesson the students answer the questions:

- What is PDF?
- What is its purpose?
- Do you need a dedicated programme to open PDF files?
- What are the features of a PDF document?
- Which of them can be regarded as advantages, and which as disadvantages?

Every text editor has a default file formatfile formatfile format in which it saves documents. However text editors can save their documents in many different alternative file formats. One of the most popular is PDF.

The advantages of a PDF document:

- conformity with an industry format (the format is accepted by many companies and organizations),
- a possibility to protect a document,
- easy printing,

Protections in PDF documents:

A file saved as PDF can be viewed by a special programme, called a PDF reader. A basic programme provided free of charge which can be used on most platforms is Adobe Reader. Alternative programmes, which can view and even edit files in this format, are also available.
