Charity Shops
Anna LechCharity Shops
In this issueissue (noun)issue of The UK for Foreigners magazine we are visiting one of the charity shopscharity shops [charity shop]charity shops to talk to Vanessa, a volunteervolunteervolunteer shop assistant who has been working there for more than a decade.
Journalist: Good morning, Vanessa, thank you for finding time for us.
Vanessa: My pleasuremy pleasureMy pleasure, I’m really glad I can talk to a magazine like yours. I think charity shops are something every foreign visitor to the UK should know about. All of us have been doing a great job and people from overseasoverseasoverseas should feel invited to join our initiatives or just enjoy shopping with us.
J: Vanessa, can you tell our readers a bit more about the concept of charity shops?
V: Well, charity shops have been present in Britain for over a century. One of the first registered shops opened in 1899. It sold goods made by blindblindblind people to raise money for their society. The idea of a charity shop is that it sells used goodsgoods [good]goods such as clothes, books, toys, jewellery or even furniture. The money made in this way goes to a specific causecausecause or a charity. There are many charities in the UK, they raise money to support people in financial difficultiesin financial difficultiesin financial difficulties, the homelessthe homelessthe homeless, the disabledthe disabledthe disabled, children from poor families and even stray animalsstray animals [stray animal]stray animals.
J: Where do you take the goods from?
V: People bring us things they don’t need anymore. You can donatedonatedonate anything you don’t need. No matter if it is a brand new, never worn jacket or your old jeans. Most of the things we have in stock, however, are used clothes and books. We sell these at really affordableaffordableaffordable prices. Our price tagsprice tags [price tag]price tags rarely show numbers higher than 4‑5£. When something is in bad conditionin bad conditionin bad condition, we offer a discountdiscount (noun)discount or send the itemitemitem to a recycling company which gives us money for the recycling material.
J: That sounds interesting. And do charity shops work in the same way as all the other shops in the high streethigh streethigh street?
V: Well, yes. We have to follow all the standard regulations. We have tillstills [till]tills and we issue receiptsreceipts [receipt]receipts or invoicesinvoices [invoice]invoices. Our customers can pay in cashpay in cashpay in cash or by cardpay by cardby card. A customer has the right to return an itemreturn an itemreturn an item and get a refundget a refundget a refund. Only one thing is different… Most of our shop assistants are volunteers. This means they do not get a regular salarysalarysalary. They usually work in 4 hour shiftsshifts [shift] (noun)shifts. The idea of a charity shop is to support a charity, not to generate incomegenerate incomegenerate income for its ownerownerowner. So in this aspect, we are not like other businesses. People who want to do something for those in needin needin need can make a donationmake a donationmake a donation or devotedevotedevote some of their free time to work as shop assistants. In this way, the charity can raise more money.
J: Are charity shops popular? Do you have a lot of customers?
V: Yes, I would say we are getting extremely popular. There are many reasons for that. People are awareawareaware that all of us have too many things. They try to support sustainable retailsustainable retailsustainable retail and give the things they don’t need a new life. A few years back we would say we just sell used or second‑hand clothes. Now we use the termtermtermpre‑ownedpre‑ownedpre‑owned or even pre‑loved! Not so long ago I saw an ad in one of the papers, inviting the customers to find their “pre‑loved treasures” in a charity shop. I absolutely love that phrase!
J: Well, that sounds encouragingencouragingencouraging! So, what can you recommend?
V: Well, if I can advise you, we have this unique vintage bracelet… You won’t buy anything like this in a chain storechain storechain store and it’s really inexpensiveinexpensiveinexpensive…
