Hello, my name is Seattle and I’m a 13‑year‑old from Olympia, USA. It is a unique name and a lot of people think that it comes from the name of the city in Washington state. However, it’s not true. In fact, I have American Indian roots, so my parents called me Seattle. It comes from the Salish language and means “man of high status”. They believe in tradition and wanted to use the name of the leader of an Indian tribe my ancestors come from. They hope my name will influence my future and that I will achieve great things.

Hi, I’m Mahuika and I come from New Zealand. My name is quite rare and comes from the Māori language. My family and I live in a city in Wellington and I study in primary school. My teachers and friends like my original name. We come from a Māori tribe and my mom wanted to give me a name to remember our ancestors. Mahuika was the Goddess of Fire. One day I really want to be someone who keeps the fire in her heart and loves the things she does. I hope I will be able to keep the fire going and follow my dreams.

I come from South Africa and my name is Lindiwe. My name has roots in the Zulu language and means “waited for”. My dad gave me this name because as he says, he and my mom waited to have me for a very long time. I was born very early and had to stay in hospital. When the doctors told my parents I was going to be fine, they gave me this name. Although now I’m strong and healthy, my parents still treat me as if I was their little girl. People often ask me if I like my name, but I don’t think about it much. I’m just proud to come from the largest ethnic group – “the people of the heavens”.

I’m Waru. My name means fire. It is becoming very popular for Australians to give their kids names connected with the culture of the native people. I’m not a fan of my name because every time I introduce myself, I have to spell it. However, it makes me feel like a part of the Aboriginal people, who lived on the continent before the British arrived. My parents say that I’m as special to them as the fire was to those people from the past. You know, because most of them needed fire to survive – cook meals, keep warm and scare off dangerous animals or enemies.
