A report is an oral or written accountaccount of the events in which one took part; a presentation of the course of events. When writing a report, one must remember to provide specific information – preferably in the form of answers to the following questions: who?, when?, where?, what did they take part in? what did they do? Facts, names, dates and numbers are important. Present your story in the first person singular or plural.
A report requires words specifying the sequence of time, e.g. at the beginning, then, subsequently, later, next, at the end, and evaluating the events (describing your feelings and impressions), e.g. great, interesting, attractive, boring, average, sleepy, a waste of time etc. Events should be presented in sequence (in chronological order). You can attach a tour map and photos to the report.
Imagine that you have taken in the trip to Książ Castle. Give an oral report presenting its course of events. Use words that describe your emotions.
Firstly, use words which express a positive opinion of the trip, e.g. great, fantastic, awesome.
Secondly, use words which express a negative account of the event, e.g boring, useless, a waste of time etc.
Read the following passage. Decide whether you can call it a report. Justify your answer.
On 13th July 2008 I became a Dwarf Hunter! And it went like this...
On Sunday morning my Dad asked me to go on a mysterious trip around Wrocław and he promised that I would have tremendous fun and I would discover exceptional creatures.
At 11 am sharp I found myself with a group of around forty kids with their parents by Wrocław Puppet Theatre. We were all given beautiful tickets and... Dwarf Hunters’ Maps. At the beginning of the trip we had to rub our (and our parents’) noses with a wild strawberries mixture, which attracts dwarfs. Some parents would turn their noses up at the idea, but they eventually did as they were told.
Then we began our hunt (it was, of course, along the trail marked on the map). Firstly, we visited Spa Dwarfs that dwell at the swimming pool on Teatralna street. Later we went to Świdnicka street, where we met Papa Dwarf – the eldest of Wrocław Dwarfs, as well as Dwarfs from Świdnicka street – climbing a street lamp.
Subsequently we reached Solny square. Besides Salt Dwarfs (which climb higher those form Świdnicka street) we even found dragons there! Then we went to the Market Square, where Aleksander Fredro’s monument is guarded by Dwarf the Guard.
We were slightly tired when our tour guide – Marta Miniewicz – took us to St. Mary Magdalene Church. She told us the story of David and Goliath there. Subsequently we went again through the Market Square to the dwarf settlement, located in the vicinity of the very famous Hansel and Gretel tenement houses in Wrocław. Unfortunately we were unable to open the door leading to their settlement...
We went further to Jatki through Odrzańska street. It was there where we could grab a bronze goat by the horns.
The trip ended at around 1 pm, when we visited Dwarf the Prisoner in a former prison at Więzienna street.
Finally there was a prize waiting for us: each Hunter, after uttering a terribly long password, was given a Hunter’s Stamp on their map. I managed to complete the task and receive the Stamp. It was an unforgettable Sunday.
In a report giving an account of a tour called Wrocław dwarfs’ trail, mark any relevant information with the following colours: green - who took part in the trip; blue - when the trip started and ended; red - indicate words relating to the sequence of time; purple - places and landmarks visited by the participants.
