Chess Boxing - A Checkmate or a Knockout?A.
Sports play a vital role in our lives. Practising them builds up our muscles, and improves staminastamina and stress‑resistancestress‑resistance. Nowadays, we can choose among a big number of disciplines – swimming, tennis, athletics, martial arts, dancing, and working out in the gym. The choice is truly immenseimmense and both sports’ amateursamateurs and professionals continue to search for new ways of being active, which leads to the creation of new disciplines and tournamentstournaments. Sometimes a new sport is made by combining two, seeminglyseemingly incompatibleincompatible, disciplines. The outcomeoutcome is then a hybridhybrid sport. Such is the case with chess boxing.

Chess boxing, or chessboxing is a relativelyrelatively new sport. The first mention of the discipline took place in 1992 and is attributed toattributed to Enki Bilal, a French comic book author. The first official championships were held in 2003 in Amsterdam and the winner and the first World Chess Boxing Champion became Iepe Rubingh. Rubingh, a Dutch athleteathlete and performance artist, later established the World Chess Boxing Organisation. Since then, the sports’ popularity has been on the risehas been on the rise.

Although it may appear easy to win, in fact even the sheersheer participation is highly complex and accessible only to those able to meet certain criteriacriteria. At the outsetAt the outset, chess boxing was an elitistelitist sport. In order to participate in a tournamenttournament, you had to demonstrate appropriate levels both of boxing and of chess. Your wish and dedicationdedication had to be accompanied bybe accompanied by skills and scores, or else you wouldn’t be allowed to take part in the contest. With the growth of interest, the expected levels were lowered, so that if you want to take part intake part in the competitioncompetition you need a few months of both regular chess and boxing training.

Chess boxing is a martial artsmartial arts sports discipline and it has a set of rules that players abide byabide by. The contestcontest takes place on the boxing ring, into which a table, chairs, and a chess board are brought alternatelyalternately with the boxing round’s end. The participants start with a speed chessspeed chess round, and the boxing round follows. All in all, there are 6 chess rounds and 5 boxing rounds if one of the contestants doesn’t win earlier. According toAccording to the rules, there are many ways in which a contest can end. Typically, a player can win by a checkmatecheckmate or a knockoutknockout. Yet, these are not the only possible scenarios.

Despite the fact that as a martial arts sport, which chess boxing clearly is, it might be seen as highly injuriousinjurious, scientists nowadays focus on its potential benefits. What researchers value the most is the combination of a physical and a mental sport. They study chess boxing to find out what can be done to improve the staminaimprove the stamina and strengthstrength, both mental and physical, of athletes in general. It seems that the complex and challenging environmentchallenging environment in which this sport takes place constitutes the greatest valueconstitutes the greatest value for athletes and their development.
