Lesson plan overview (Process)

Introduction

1. The teacher determines the purpose of the class: students will familiarise themselves with one of the ballads by Adam Mickiewicz. He/she gives students the criteria of success.

2. The teacher asks:

  • In which literary texts did you meet the devil? You can direct students to indicate the Bible, legends, fairy tales.

  • What features are attributed to the devil in these texts? It is worth mentioning a happy devil from the novel by K. Makuszyński Przyjaciel wesołego diabła.

3. Students use the mind map method to write synonyms of the word DEVIL. They can use a thesaurus.

Realization

1. Execution of the ex. 1. The teacher checks if the students understand the meaning of idioms, he/she asks in which situations they can be used.

2. The teacher tells the title of the ballad of A.Mickiewicz and asks students to identify the subject of the poem before the reading and to describe Ms. Twardowska. Students exchange ideas.

3. The teacher plays the recording from the lesson “Spotkanie z Diabłem” in e‑podręcznik – a film with the ballad recitation. Students listen and follow the text in e‑podręcznik or in the abstract. The teacher asks students to pay attention to the sequence of events. The students check the unknown words and read the text once again to fully understand it.

4. Execution of exercises to the text: exercise 5 – organizing the the sequence of events; Exercise 6. – giving titles to illustrations to the text, ćw.7. – searching for information in the text.

5. Work in pairs. The teacher distributes the dictionaries of foreign terms and encyclopaedias or informs what internet sources can the students use. The students work in pairs and do the exercise number 8 from the abstract: they search the information about Twardowski and Mefistofeles.

6. Writing a note in accordance with the command from Exercise 9.

Summary

1. The teacher asks questions prompting students to summarize, e.g.

  • Is this text really about things that you expected after reading its title?

  • What other titles could this poem have?

  • What qualities did Pani Twardowska have to have that the devil escaped?

2. At the end, students wonder about the problem:

  • Why did A. Mickiewicz give the ballad the title Pani Twardowska?

  • What is the funcyion of the title of the poem?

The students give different titles and they draw conclusions, for example:

  • Ania z Zielonego Wzgórza – information about the heroine and the place of events.

  • Obcy – the curiosity of the reader, an indication of the hero.

  • Hobbit, czyli tam i z powrotem – preview of the book's action.

  • Przygody Tomka Sawyera – an indication of the hero and the type of events that will take place.
