What Makes the World Go Round?
Zuzanna Kościuk What Makes the World Go Round?

There is a saying “money makes the world go roundmoney makes the world go roundmoney makes the world go round” which means that money is important. It affectsaffects [affect (verb)]affects almost everything around us. There’s no wonder then that the English language has got so many money idiomsidioms [idiom]idioms. What do they mean? And how do we use them?

Sometimes, our words don’t convinceconvinceconvince others. They want to see action. That’s why you can hear them saying “put your money where your mouth isput your money where your mouth isput your money where your mouth is.” After all, if you strongly believe in something, you want to proveprove (verb)prove it. What if you don’t have the funds? Everyone knows that money doesn’t grow on treesmoney doesn’t grow on treesmoney doesn’t grow on trees. People work to earn it and so we should spend it carefully.

However, sometimes it’s enough to have a penny. That’s all it takes for someone to tell us what they think. Offer someone a penny for their thoughtsa penny for your thoughtsa penny for their thoughts and see what they say. But wait, pennies are preciouspreciousprecious, too. Even one is a lot. If you think like that, it might mean you’re a penny‑pincherpenny‑pincherpenny‑pincher. Penny‑pinchers are people who don’t want to spend any money. Then again, money talksmoney talksmoney talks. If you decide to spend it, you can get almost everything you want. Many wealthywealthywealthy people believe it’s worth spending money to show their positionpositionposition.

We should also remember this old phrase: time is moneytime is moneytime is money. With all the talk of richesrichesriches, people often forget that the most valuable thing we have is time. Time to achieveachieveachieve your dreams. Time to spend with your family and friends. It never stops and it seems there’s never enough time to do what we want. But if you aren’t sentimentalsentimentalsentimental, just remember the meaning of the phrase: don’t waste time because you could be using it to earn money.

Can you see how money makes the world go round, now?
