Voter turnout is very low in Poland. In the parliamentary elections of 2015 it was 50,92%, and a year earlier in the elections to the European Parliament – as little as 24%. And yet when choosing our representatives to the legislative powers, we have real influenceinfluenceinfluence over the issues concerningto concernconcerning state policy. It’s the deputies who decide how the public money are being spent, how high the taxes should be, how the healthcare systemhealthcare systemhealthcare system should be organised or about the school system reforms. It is very vital for any social group to be politically represented in the Sejm. The needs of people of different backgrounds (age, job, education) are different, and the deputies should mirrorto mirrormirror that varietyvarietyvariety. Go vote! And if you were a deputy – what decisions would you make?

Imagine you can decide about the budget of the State of Seniors and Youth. The budget at your disposal is 100 billion zlotys. You can choose to spend the budget on some of the options provided or suggest your own ideas Options: high pensions, subsidies to loans for young married couples, luxurious nursing homes, grants for summer vacations for young people to visit other EU countries, grants for summer vacations for retired people, free swimming pool tickets for people over 60, scholarships for highschool and university students, grants for internships, geriatric hospitals, free nurseries and kindergartens. Decide how much money you want spend on each option. Did you manage to balance the interests of each of the social groups? Compare your choices with your classmates. Discuss, what you would like your taxes to be spent on in such a state
