Student Council Elections
Zuzanna Kościuk Student Council Elections

Overview

Hi, I'm Sara. My school takes student council electionsstudent council electionsstudent council elections very seriously. Each year, the candidatescandidates [candidate]candidates create a platformplatformplatform and then each runs a campaignruns a campaign [run a campaign]runs a campaign to win our votes. And the things they talk about? Let’s just say the headteacher doesn’t always like their ideas.

Let’s see what this year’s candidates promise!

Leslie promises that students won’t have more than two tests a week. “I will make sure you don’t have too much work,” she says. She also plans to create a student‑runstudent‑runstudent‑run garden in the school’s backyard. Everyone loves this idea. I believe she might win this year’s election.

Chris

The other candidate is Chris. Chris promises to change what our school canteen serves. “I will make sure the canteen serves healthy food,” he says. Not everyone likes this idea, but it’s a good goal. He promises to create a support groupsupport groupsupport group for students in need, too. Chris really wants us all to be healthier and happier. I might vote forvote forvote for him!

Debate and Voting

Before I can cast my votecast my vote [cast one’s vote]cast my vote, we’re going to have a debatedebatedebate. The school makes it look like presidentialpresidentialpresidential debates. The candidates wear elegant clothes. They only have one minute to answer each question.

After each debate, we have an opinion pollopinion pollopinion poll. Students decide which candidate they liked best. The results hang in the main hall. A week after the debate, we vote. The school turns our gym into a polling stationpolling stationpolling station. Everyone gets a ballotballotballot and chooses between the two candidates. Then, we cast our votes. We even have a huge, transparent ballot boxballot boxballot box!

The electedelectedelected student gets a seat on the council. They don’t always keep their promises, but that’s politicspoliticspolitics for you. At least the election process is fun!
