I think my greatest adventure was my backpackingbackpackingbackpacking trip around Europe when I was only 17 years old. I’ve always felt wanderlustwanderlustwanderlust and dreamt about travelling since I was a kid. Norway is a country which really prides itself on daredevildaredevildaredevil acts like that. We have many great trailblazerstrailblazers [trailblazer]trailblazers who had the guts and travelled around the world, like Thor Heyerdahl, or Roald Amundsen. He was the first man to reach the North PoleNorth PoleNorth Pole. Some of the journeys of my countrymen were perilousperilousperilous, and sometimes they never came back. I think they just liked playing with fire. My journey, however, wasn’t a dangerous undertakingdangerous undertakingdangerous undertaking – I had some money for accommodationaccommodationaccommodation and some family in Europe – but I definitely felt the thrill when I  embarked onembarked on [embark on]embarked on this journey! I didn’t want to take any chances though, and I had the whole journey planned beforehand. I didn’t want to risk having no place to stay so I also took a tent. I ended up visiting five countries in around three weeks and doing a lot of camping and hikinghikinghiking. It was absolutely mind‑blowingmind‑blowingmind‑blowing. I learned a lot about other cultures, and that you can meet friendly people everywhere you go but also that you can find peace in nature.

I’ve always wanted to travel to Europe. I am from a small town in Nebraska, and people usually don’t travel far. I really like my hometown, but everybody knows each other here and after a while you just want some excitementexcitementexcitement! Besides that, I’ve always dreamt of visiting Europe and seeing the amazing archaeological sites over there! I want to study archaeology in the future, but the United States is not a really old country and there isn’t much of it here. The oldest monumentsmonuments [monument]monuments we have are about 400 years old. That’s nothing in comparison with Europe where almost every big city has buildings that are twice as old! It has always been on my bucket listbucket listbucket list of things to explore. So, really eagereagereager to tick off the things on it, I decided to visit my relatives in Britain. I was really scared of flying, and even though the oddsoddsodds of crashing are actually very low, I consider planes to be a major life hazardlife hazardlife hazard. Having never felt that my life was in perilperilperil before I got on board, it was so scary that I had a mild panic attack! But throughout the flight I managed to overcome my fearsovercome fearsovercome my fears and it was so liberatingliberatingliberating! I get scared quite easily, you see, and I want to change that. I don’t know how yet, it’s a tough nut to cracktough nut to cracktough nut to crack for me, but I’m working on it. Well… let’s come back to my story, though. When I got to the UK, I stayed for three weeks and visited all the famous archeological sites in Britain like Stonehenge, Sutton Hoo and even the Orkney Islands! My journey taught me that some obstacles are only in your mind. Sometimes you just have to take a chance on life and it will pay off with wonderful sights and unforgettableunforgettable (adj.)unforgettable experiences!

I would probably say that my biggest adventure in life isn’t just a one‑offone‑offone‑off event. It’s still ongoingongoingongoing! It’s my life as a semisemisemi-professional skater. I started skateboarding when I was little and now travel around Australia and take part in various skating events and stuntsstunts [stunt]stunts. I make videos on YouTube and I have my own brand of skating geargeargear. What we have – and I think that’s the best thing – is a great communitycommunitycommunity. In fact, most of my mates are either skaters or stuntmen, too. I would definitely say that skateboarding can be a dangerous undertaking if you don’t watch out or don’t wear the proper protective paddingprotective paddingprotective padding. There’s a lot of safety hazardssafety hazardssafety hazards in this job, and you can run a riskrun a riskrun a risk of serious injuryinjuryinjury if you don’t know your way around a half‑pipehalf‑pipehalf‑pipe or an obstacle courseobstacle courseobstacle course. If you are not well prepared, skating may be just like Russian rouletteRussian rouletteRussian roulette. You never know when you will get a serious injury. I guess the best thing about this life is that when you skate with your friends and do dangerous flipsflips [flip]flips, you stop being afraid of normal life’s obstacles and learn to overcome them – in the same way you dodge them on your skateboard! And you meet great mates on the way while you’re at it. For me, adventure is all about the people, the togetherness and the thrill.

My greatest adventure wasn’t so pleasantpleasantpleasant at all. I was actually scared that I would die! It was in my home city, Kyoto. There was a huge earthquake  and I was in a supermarket at the time. The ground started shaking and all the products started falling from the shelves. The whole place went dark because there was a power failurepower failurepower failure at the nearby power station, and we had to use flashlights and put on hi‑vis jacketshi‑vis jackets [hi‑vis jacket]hi‑vis jackets. The customers were scared, but didn’t panicpanic (verb)panic as their lives weren’t really under threatthreatthreat. Kyoto is prepared for such events and the buildings are quite resistant to tremorstremors [tremor]tremors. We also train in school to prepare for situations like this and learn how not to jeopardise our safety even more in such cases. We are taught about safe places to hide and things to do. But although I was not in danger, the accident in the power station was a lot more serious. The torn cables created a real life hazard and started a fire there. Fortunately, the fire brigade came over and put it out. I’m so happy that they are here and care for our safety. They put their lives on the lineput their lives on the lineput their lives on the line every day for us and go through many ordealsordealordeals. This event was a real lesson for me. It taught me that life is precious and we should be grateful to all those who have devoted their own lives to protect us.
