Introductionmac1e8208788acf08_1528450127855_0Introduction

The students revise basic units of time and the correlation among  them:

1 h = 60 min
1 min = 60 s
1 daydayday = 24 h
1 quarterquarterquarter = 15 min

Proceduremac1e8208788acf08_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: developing the skills of calculating the time.

Teacher divides students into four groups. Each group receives the clock and the magic recipe. The aim of the group is to set the clock at 12 and then move its arms according to the recipe of the wonderful elixir. Otherwise they will be changed into the frogs.

The magic recipe of the WONDERFUL ELIXIR

The brew of lavender, the juice of apricot,
at noon carefully put into the pot.
Mix it for long forty‑five minutes,
add two teeth of cheetah without the limits.
After three quarters add the glass of prunes
and stir them with two golden spoons,
mix it with pepper, garlic at once.
Wait for 17 minutes three times.
Finish at three, if you didn't give the time correctly.
You will become a frog immediately.

The groups which became frog repeat the activity, the others get the „+”.

The students convert the units of time.

Task
Complete:

a) 240 s = … min,
b) 4 h = … min,
c) 126 min = … h … min,
d)36 h = … daydayday,
e)10 min = … h,
f) 45 s = … min,
g) 120 minut = … quarters.

[Slideshow]

The students work individually using their computers. They become familiar with the sample time calculations.

Next, they use the information they have got to solve the tasks.

Task
Write how much time passes by:

a) from 3.15 a.m. to 3.56 a.m.
b) from 7.34 a.m. to 8.29 a.m.
c) from 12.14 p.m. to 1 p.m.
d) from 5.35p m. to 10.18 p.m.

Task
The film started at 4.55 p.m. and took 2 hours 15 minutes. What time did it finish?

Task
Ania went from Tarnow to Warsaw by train. She changed trains in Cracow. She left Tarnow at 10.47 a.m. and arrived in Cracow at 12.10 p.m.. She continued her journey  leaving Cracow at 1 p.m. Finally she arrived in Warsaw at 3.57 p.m.
a) How long did she travel from Cracow to Warsaw?
b) How long did she travel from Tarnow to Warsaw?
c) How long did the journey take?

An extra task
It’s 1.48 p.m.. What time will be in 3 hours 12 minutes?

Lesson summarymac1e8208788acf08_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusions to memorize:

1 h = 60 min
1 min = 60 s
