Hi, it’s Dave again. Welcome to my culture blog!
This time I’m going to tell you about typical Londoners’ houses. As you probably remember, I’m from Harrow, a neighbourhoodneighbourhoodneighbourhood in the north‑west of London. It’s not very close to central London, but we can get there quickly by underground train. We call it the Tube.
In my area most people live in terraced housesterraced houses [terraced house]terraced houses. These houses look the same and they are next to each other in one long line. They usually have one or two floors and a little garden at the back. You can see red brickbrickbrick everywhere – very English! My parents bought our terraced house when I was small, but I know many people don’t have their own houses, they rentrent (verb)rent them. It means they have to pay the rentrent (noun)rent to their landlordlandlordlandlord or landladylandladylandlady who ownsowns [own]owns the house. I know so much about this because my mum, Laura, works as an estate agentestate agentestate agent – she helps people find a perfect house for them. She knows a lot of houses which are for salefor salefor sale or for rentfor rentfor rent. Sometimes she lets me go with her to see some nice places. Last time we went to a fantastic detached housedetached housedetached house with an enormousenormousenormous garden. It was in the suburbssuburbssuburbs, far away from the city centre. There was a lot of nice furniturefurniturefurniture and three big fireplacesfireplaces [fireplace]fireplaces. English people love fireplaces, it’s probably because of our rainy weather! Houses like this are more popular in the country, where the land is not so expensive. Here in London, we don’t have too much space for big gardens. There are around nine million LondonersLondonersLondoners and most of us live in terraced and semi‑detachedsemi‑detached housesemi‑detached houses. Blocks of flatsblocks of flats [block of flats]Blocks of flats are more commoncommoncommon only in the city centre.
