Two Famous American GamesBaseballBaseball is one of the most famousfamous games and a symbol of American culture. HoweverHowever, the USA and Canada are not the only countries where people play baseball. It is also very popular in Mexico, Australia, Germany, and Japan. Softball is another game, very similarsimilar to baseball. Some people think that it is an easier versionversion of baseball, better for younger players and women. But this is not true! Men play softball, too. It is also a disciplinediscipline at the summer Olympic GamesOlympic Games. So what are these two games about and what are the differencesdifferences between them?
There are two teamsteams in baseball. The attackingattacking team tries to get points and the oppositeopposite team tries to stop them. A player called a pitcherpitcher throwsthrows the ball to the catchercatcher. A player from the attacking team, called a batterbatter, must hit the ball with his batbat and run around all four basesbases to get a point. He must stop at a base when one of the opposite team members catches the ball. Most baseball bats are woodenwooden stickssticks which can hit the ball very hard. The balls are made of leatherleather and are white. Some players, like the catcher, must wear special helmetshelmets and other kind of protectionprotection in case they get hit by the ball.
Softball is in many ways similar to baseball. Like in baseball, there is a ball, there are bases, pitchers, catchers and batters. First, people only played softball indoorsindoors but now they often play it outdoorsoutdoors. The ball in this game is yellow and much largerlarger than in baseball. It is also lighterlighter. The bats are much larger and lighter, too. This means that the ball moves at a much slower speedspeed. The softball fieldfield is also much smaller than in baseball. There are fewerfewer injuriesinjuries than in baseball so not many players wear any kind of protection.
Some young players begin their career with playing softball to developdevelop all the importantimportant skillsskills. Later, they move on to baseball and are often very successfulsuccessful. WhicheverWhichever game you prefer, they can both give you a lot of fun and good exerciseexercise with friends.
