Doctor: What brings you here today?

 Tom:  I’m not feeling well, doctor. I feel nauseous, and I have to visit the toilet very often.

 Doctor:  It seems like you have diarrhea then. Do you also have a stomach ache?

 Tom: Yes, it aches a lot.

 Doctor: What about a fever? Have you got a fever?

 Tom: No, I haven’t. I don’t think so.

 Doctor: I see….Tell me what you’ve eaten in the past twenty‑four hours?

 Tom: Well, I went to a party yesterday. I ate some burgers… some chocolate… I drank two cans of cola… Oh, and, of course, I had a slice of birthday cake… Then, a hot‑dog. Oh, and also, some ice cream…

 Doctor:  That sounds like a lot! It seems to me you have regular food poisoning. You’ve eaten a lot, and now your body needs to get rid of all that food. You must drink a lot of water so as not to become dehydrated. You mustn’t eat fatty and salty foods – nor dairy products – until you feel better. And try not to eat so much the next time you go to a party! This way you will avoid nausea and a stomach ache.

 Doctor: So, what are your symptoms, Mrs Hughes?

 Mrs Hughes: I have been feeling terrible for two days now. I cough a lot. I also have shivers and a fever.

 Doctor: Have you taken your temperature today?

 Mrs Hughes: Yes, it was thirty‑eight degrees this morning.

 Doctor: How about a backache?

 Mrs Hughes:  My back doesn’t hurt, no.

 Doctor: Earache?

 Mrs Hughes: Yes, my ears hurt a bit.

 Doctor: I’ll check your ears and throat…  Yeah, it’s not an ear infection, but your throat is sore. I’m afraid it’s a flu. You must stay home for a few days, Mrs Hughes..

 Mrs Hughes: What else should I do?

 Doctor: You should eat fruit and vegetables. You should also drink plenty of water and warm tea. And you should take painkillers three times a day, which means, every eight hours. Remember, you mustn’t take any more than that. I’ll write a prescription for you.

 Mrs Hughes: Of course, and thank you. Doctor, should I stay in bed?

 Doctor: I think it’s a good idea, because you can keep warm that way. And, please, see me next week if you still feel bad. I hope you will be fine by then though. Here’s your prescription.

 Mrs Hughes: Thank you, Doctor.

 Doctor: I can see there’s something wrong with your leg. What happened?

 Ben: I think I’ve got a sprained ankle. It’s swollen, and it hurts when I walk.

 Doctor: Let’s examine it, then.  Does it hurt when I move it?

 Ben: It hurts quite a bit.

 Doctor: Yes, you’ve definitely sprained your ankle. Luckily, it’s not very serious, so you don’t need an X‑ray. Your ankle should heal in about two weeks.

 Ben: That’s a relief. What can I do to make it heal better?

 Doctor: Try resting as much as possible. Put your foot on a pillow when you go to sleep. It helps your leg to heal. I can see that you don’t have any other illnesses, so you can safely put ice packs on your ankle every 2‑3 hours for 15‑20 minutes.

 Ben: Is there anything else to be done to make walking possible?

 Doctor: Yes, I will put an elastic bandage on your ankle right now, so that it doesn’t move too much. As for you, remember – you mustn’t do any sports for the next two weeks. Not even at school. I am writing a sick leave note to your P.E. teacher.
