With its famous university founded as long ago as in 1209, Cambridge remains one of the most picturesque cities in England. There are plenty of sights to see, including ancient college buildings, the river Cam and charming cobbled streets in the city centre. It may be hard to believe but Cambridge has been one of the best places to study for over… 800 years. The university has countless famous graduates. Sir Isaac Newton himself was a Cambridge professor. The legend has it that on a warm evening of 1666, the soon to be famous scientist was resting under an apple tree in the Trinity College garden. Suddenly, a large red apple fell right on his head. Newton shouted “Eureka”, and the law of gravity was discovered. Although this entertaining story may not be 100 per cent true, you can see a tree cloned from the one that led Newton to discover gravity in the Cambridge Botanic Garden.

Cambridge is a perfect destination for those who want to experience the atmosphere of the fourth oldest university in the world, admire the beautiful architecture and meet students and professors wearing traditional gowns. One of the best ways to see Cambridge from a different perspective is a punting tour on the river Cam. Punts are traditional flat boats steered by punters with long sticks or poles. Punting offers a great opportunity to take photos of iconic colleges from a different angle. You can enjoy the fantastic panorama of King’s College Chapel, the Bridge of Sighs or Trinity College from your boat without worrying that cars or any other  21st century inventions will spoil your view.

Another exciting way to see Cambridge is to join a bike tour. Cycling lets you look at the city just as the local people do. Bikes are so popular here that Cambridge has been called Great Britain’s Cycle City. It is said that one in four city residents cycle to work. This is the highest level of cycling in the country. The city has a lot of bike‑friendly infrastructure. There is a bike park near the main railway station that has space for nearly 3000 bikes. There are more than 80 miles of cycle lanes in and around the city.

There is even a “cyclist counting machine” on one of the lanes. It counted 1 million bike trips in just one year! Bikes have become another symbol of Cambridge. They can be seen on postcards, magnets, t‑shirts and other tourist souvenirs.
