For sure, people who do not know how to use computers are in the minority nowadays. These electronic devices are ubiquitous around us and it’s simply hard to avoid them. However, when it comes to advanced skills, the group of users who can boast having them turns out to be quite small. Knowing how to use a word processor, spreadsheets, various graphic and editing programmes, let alone web designing or coding, immediately makes you stand out from the crowd of people whose only abilities are browsing the internet or using communicators. Starting to acquire these skills early enhances your position on the labour market.

1. Word processing is one of the most basic skills young people learn quite early on. Everybody can type probably earlier than they can handwrite their first letters. Word processing is not only about entering text into a computer. It is the knowledge how to edit and format it that is in demand. There are a few word processing softwares provided by the biggest computer companies on the market. Although the software companies compete with one another, the functionalities of the programmes largely overlap, so learning one makes it more intuitive to learn another. Basic word processing skills include: entering text and formatting its font, margins, spacing between lines, and inserting shapes, clip arts or pictures. Cutting, copying and pasting, and managing a spell check in a desired language are also rather straightforward actions. Users with more advanced skills know how to insert more specific features of the document, such as headers and footers, dates and page numbers, and various types of tables. They will also be able to create hyperlinks to bookmarked locations, which is a useful feature of texts which will be available online. Word processors can be used for generating all kinds of printable materials and advanced users can design labels, business cards, invitations, etc.

2. Many people dread spreadsheets although more and more jobs nowadays require advanced skills in this area. Adequately written formulas streamline many processes, save time by speeding up mundane tasks and allow for the manipulating of large volumes of data. No business can function nowadays without such a tool, but it’s also useful for students. What do you need to know? Start with learning how to sort your data into a specific order. Pay attention to marking all rows or columns you want to be sorted as not doing that precisely can mess up the whole spreadsheet. You will definitely also need to learn how to navigate your databases by finding and adjusting your data. Data filters are the tools to be used for these purposes. They will allow you to sort, hide, and search for information you need. There is a list of keyboard commands which will help you to do it quickly and effectively. Pivot tables are also among the basics you need to know. They allow you to summarise, count and average the data. If you learn the functions gradually, spreadsheets will soon change from foe to best friend.

3. We live in a visual world. Infographics are everywhere and they need to be designed and edited by someone. If you have a bit of an artistic aptitude, you are creative, and know how to make your creations visually appealing, you should add some computer skills to it for the prospect of a great job. There are a number of software tools and desktop publishing programmes that you should be familiar with to open a world of possibilities. It’s a good idea to start with free photo editing apps easily available online and play with them for a while before deciding if it’s something you would like to do in earnest. Cropping, colour‑correcting, and resizing are the graphic designer's alphabet. Understanding different formats and being able to edit and modify graphics such as JPEGs, PGNs, GIFs, and others, will definitely also come in handy.

4. At the moment, programmers are the most sought‑after and best‑paid professionals on the market, and the forecast clearly shows that it’s not going to change any time soon. Practically every branch of industry is becoming digitalised and so the demand for skilled computer coders far outweighs the supply. Obviously, not everyone dreams about a tech career. However, coding skills open so many doors these days, that they are definitely worth devoting some time to. The good news is that you can start acquiring coding skills yourself. There are many coding languages, so just find out what they are used for, get hold of a manual or tutorial and check if it’s something for you. If the answer is “yes”, you may want to support your skills with more formal education.
