Author: Magdalena Jankun

Target group

8th‑grade student of elementary school

Core curriculum

XIV. Selected problems and geographical regions of Asia. Asia as a continent of geographical contrasts.

1. Shows, on the basis of general geographical and thematic maps, that Asia is an area of great geographical contrasts.

General aim of education: The student will determine the geographical location of Asia.

Criteria for success

Lesson plan overwiew

Introduction

  1. The teacher gives the topic of the lesson and informs students about the goals of the lesson.

  2. Students work in pairs. Using geographical atlases and measuring instruments, they estimate the size of the Asian continent.

  3. People who are willing to come up to the board and present their way of counting.

  4. The students check the size of the continent using the source materials: internet, e‑textbook, statistical yearbook, etc.

Realization

  1. The teacher displays an Asian map on an interactive whiteboard from an e‑textbook, based on which students jointly determine the geographical location of the Asian continent.

  2. The teacher asks students to work in pairs, analyze the borders between Asia and Europe, Africa, North America and Australia in a geographical atlas. One by one, the teacher asks those willing to indicate the course of the borders on the Asian wall map.

  3. The teacher explains what the terms 'natural boundary' and 'contractual boundary' mean. He initiates a brief discussion on this subject.

  4. Work in pairs. Students, using the geographical atlas, search for the extreme points of Asia on the map and determine their mathematical position. Subsequent people approach the wall map and indicate points, giving their geographical coordinates.

  5. Work in pairs. Students, using geographical atlases, prepare information on Asia's coastline. Willing people indicate on the wall map of Asia geographical elements classified as the horizontal shape of the continent's surface.

  6. Exercise on shaping the orientation on the map. At the beginning work in pairs using a geographical atlas. Alternately, students choose to search for geographic objects and point them on the map: oceans, seas, bays, straits, islands, peninsulas, archipelagos.

  7. Another exercise for eager students. The student indicates on the wall map geographical objects given by classmates. With a very good knowledge of the map, the teacher should put the highest mark.

Summary

  1. At the conclusion of the lesson, students perform exercises on the interactive whiteboard.

  2. The teacher assesses the students, taking into account the contribution and their possibilities.

Asia's geographical location

Asia is the largest continent on Earth. Its area measures 44.5 million kmIndeks górny 2. The continuous area of land is located entirely in the northern hemisphere and spans from the equator to high circumpolar lattitudes in the North. Many Asian islands are located in the southern hemisphere, including, among others, a large part of the Malay Archipelago. Asia is also almost entirely located in the eastern hemisphere – the only region of Asia that is found in the western hemisphere is the Chukchi Peninsula.
Asia and Europe constitute a continuous block of land and the common name Eurasia is often used to refer to them. You already know that the border between these continents is contractual in nature. Europe is often referred to as a great peninsula located to the west of Asia. To the South‑West of Asia, behind the Suez Pass and the Red Sea, is Africa. The Bering Strait, which is 85 km wide, separates Asia from North America. The map shows Asia's geographical location.
