Introductionme7059f1b0a20134e_1528450127855_0Introduction

Two students prepare information about the rules of writing numbers as the Roman numeralsroman numeralsRoman numerals. They make a multimedia presentation or posters.

Procedureme7059f1b0a20134e_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher starts the conversation about Roman numeralsroman numeralsRoman numerals – where can we meet them? Can we read what number they represent?

Experts (students) present prepared fun facts about Roman numerals to the other students.

Students work individually, using computers. Their task is to get to know the Interactive illustration  that presents signs which we use to write Roman numerals.

Rules of writing numbers as Roman Numeralsrules of writing numbers as Roman numeralsRules of writing numbers as Roman Numerals:

- To write numbers a Roman Numerals we use seven signs:

I – 1, V – 5, X – 10, L – 50, C – 100, D – 500, M – 1000.

- To write a number we use maximum three identical of these: I, X, C, M.

- We never put two of these signs V, L, D next to each other.

- If the symbols are in decreasing order, then we add the values they represent, for example:

VI – 6, MMM – 3000, DC – 600.

- If the symbol of a smaller number occurs before the symbol of a greater number, then we subtract the smaller value from the greater value.me7059f1b0a20134e_1527752256679_0- If the symbol of a smaller number occurs before the symbol of a greater number, then we subtract the smaller value from the greater value.

IV – 4, IX – 9, CD – 400.

Students – experts answer the questions and clarify doubts of the other students.

The teacher divides the class into four persons groups. Students do the exercises using the skills they learnt. The experts go around the groups, check if the solutions are correct and clarify doubts.
