Lesson stages

Introductionmb49c51187771d9e6_1528450127855_0Introduction

Students revise relations between units of lengthunits of lengthunits of length, mass and time.

Proceduremb49c51187771d9e6_1528446435040_0Procedure

The teacher divides students into three groups. Each group draws one piece of cardboard with texts.

- Units of lengthunits of lengthUnits of length.

- Units of mass.

- Units of timeunits of timeUnits of time.

Groups’ task is to make posters with the revision of information about given units.
After having completed the task, posters are hung in prepared places, above respective task stations.

Students work in the same groups and do exercises from each task station. They obtain points for correct solutions. A group that has the most points gets a grade from class activity.

Station I – length units.

Task 1
Open the applet and do the exercises by correctly converting unitsconverting unitsconverting units.

[Geogebra applet]

Task 2
Marysia bought 1 m of ribbon. First, she cut out a piece 35,5 cm long. From the left part she cut out 227 mm more. Compare the lengths of obtained pieces of ribbon.

Station II – mass units.

Task 3
Match the same masses into pairs.

[Illustration 1]

Task 4
Two gardeners were collecting apples to one box which can fit 37,5 kg of apples. One of them collected 20 kg and 350 dag and the other 1250 dag and 1620 g. Calculate if collected apples can fit into the box.

Station III – time units.

Task 5
Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. Breaks are 10 min, apart from the lunch break, after the fourth lesson that lasts 20 min. How many times will a student that has six lessons spend at school?

Task 6
Tomek spends a third of the daydayday at school, 14 of the remaining time on doing homework and improving his English. How much free time does he have per daydayday, if he sleeps around 8 hours? The teacher evaluates the students’ work and clarifies doubts.

An extra task:
Old Polish units of lengthunits of lengthunits of length:

- sążeń = 3 łokcie = 6 stóp,
- łokieć = 2 stopy,
- stopa = 288 mm,
- pręt = 15 stóp.

Using information in the frame, answer the questions.

a. How many metres does one sążeń have?

b. How many centimeters are four stopy?

c. How many łokieć is one pręt?

Lesson summarymb49c51187771d9e6_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the revision exercises. Then together they sum‑up the classes, by formulating the conclusions to memorise.

- We can convert units of lengthunits of lengthunits of length using the relations between them:
1 km = 1000 m
1 m = 100 cm
1 m = 10 dm
1 dm = 10 cm
1 cm = 10 mm

- We can convert units of mass using the relations between them:
1 t = 1000 kg
1 kg = 100 dag
1 dag = 10 g
1 kg = 1000 g

- We can convert units of timeunits of timeunits of time using the relations between them:
1 daydayday = 24 hours
1 hour = 60 minutes
1 minute = 60 seconds
1 quarterquarterquarter = 15 minutes
