Lesson stages

Introductionmdf88371596321a91_1528450127855_0Introduction

The teacher introduces the topic of the lesson: identifying the pyramids on the basis of their nets. The students are also going to draw the nets of pyramids.

Revision of the pyramid and its construction. The students give some examples of the realistic models of pyramids.

The pyramid is a spatial figurespatial figurespatial figure that has the polygonpolygonpolygonbasebasebase and the lateral faces of triangles.

The tetrahedrontetrahedrontetrahedron is a pyramid whose all faces are equilateral triangles.

[Illustration 1]

There are many examples of objects in the shape of pyramids: roofs of buildings, pyramids, Christmas decorations, the containers, the candles, etc.

Proceduremdf88371596321a91_1528446435040_0Procedure

Students are going to watch the animation and see what the net of the quadrangular pyramidpyramidpyramid looks like.

Task 1

Put on 3D glasses and look at the drawing below.

[Ilustration interactive]

The net of the pyramid with a quadrangle base.

[Illustration 2]

After watching the animation the students answer the following questions:

How many figures does the net of the quadrangular pyramid consist of? What are these figures?

Is it only one way to draw the net of the pyramid?

Students should draw the following conclusions:

- the net of the quadrangular pyramid consists of five figures: four triangles and one quadrangle,
- there are many methods of drawing the nets of pyramids.

The teacher distributes models of pyramids whose nets can be unfolded. The students become familiar with the shape of the nets of the pyramids.

Students draw the net of the tetrahedrontetrahedrontetrahedron.

Task 2

Draw the net of a tetrahedron with the length of the edge of 2 cm. Then answer the following question: How many equilateral triangles does the net of the tetrahedron consist of?mdf88371596321a91_1527752263647_0Draw the net of a tetrahedron with the length of the edge of 2 cm. Then answer the following question: How many equilateral triangles does the net of the tetrahedron consist of?

Students should come up with the following conclusions:

- The net of the tetrahedron consists of four equilateral triangles.

Students recognise the elements of the pyramids on the basis of their nets.

Task 3

Look at the drawings below and answer the following questions:
What is the name of the pyramid you can see?
How many faces does the pyramid have?
How many base edges does the pyramid have?
How many vertices does the pyramid have?

An extra task:

Draw the net of the regular hexagonal pyramid.

Lesson summarymdf88371596321a91_1528450119332_0Lesson summary

Students do the exercises summarizing the class.

Then, together they sum up the classes, drawing the conclusions to memorise:

The netnetnet of the pyramid consists of:

- one polygonpolygonpolygon which is the base of the pyramid,

- triangles which are the lateral faces of this pyramid.

The number of the triangles depends on the polygon base, e.g. the pyramid netnetnet with the base of a pentagon consists of the pentagon and five triangles.

Students discuss what they have learned during the lesson.

Homework:

Design the net of the tetrahedrontetrahedrontetrahedron. Cut it out of paper and glue together to make the modelmodelmodel of the pyramid.
